AWS Cloud Migration
- AWS
- Terraform
- Migration
- Cost optimization
The brief
The client's server room was a closet with a household fan. Their ERP ran on a 7-year-old box out of warranty, and the quote for replacement hardware was eye-watering. They wanted out of the hardware business entirely.
What I did
- Assessed workloads and mapped every dependency before touching anything.
- Built a landing zone in AWS with Terraform: VPC, subnets, security groups, SSM access — no public RDP, ever.
- Migrated the ERP database to RDS and the application tier to EC2 with automated AMI backups.
- Moved 4 TB of file shares to FSx with AD integration, so drive mappings kept working on day one.
- Set up site-to-cloud VPN, CloudWatch alarms and a monthly cost report the owner can actually read.
Outcome
- 30% below the 5-year cost of the hardware refresh
- RPO went from "last night's tape, maybe" to 15 minutes
- Patch weekends eliminated — maintenance windows are now automated
- The closet is a closet again
